The Changes AI Will Bring
A remarkable change
I did not anticipate this kind of change. You cannot understand it until you have tried it. I was able to completely rebuild the website I had wanted to improve in just six hours. Here is a brief record of what I changed in that short time. The experience also made me think deeply about how we should use artificial intelligence going forward.
Here is a brief record of what I changed in that short time. The experience also made me think deeply about how we should use artificial intelligence going forward.
- HTTPS access: With my limited knowledge, even simple things were difficult. There were so many factors to consider. I could not tell whether the problem lay with the external firewall, NAT, or an incorrectly issued certificate. AI completed the diagnosis and found the cause in five minutes: the internal firewall settings.
- Admin interface: On the old website, I changed content by editing pages directly on the server, which required remote access. For this redesign, I created an admin interface that allows me to log in and edit through the web. I used Django, which I previously knew only by name, and Wagtail for the login functionality. In fact, I spent almost all the time making the admin interface easy for me to use.
- English website: I built the English website by translating and synchronizing it with the Korean website.
- Flask + Conda + Pandas: On the previous website, the database-connected visualization page was too heavy and sometimes became unresponsive. We investigated the cause and used shared memory to make the page lighter.
- Visualizations: I created seven additional visualizations from the data I already had. It took less than ten minutes, and I added them to the website.
- People: I created a page where we can organize members' names, backgrounds, and photos.
- Teaching: I made it possible to add courses and PDFs, with PDFs managed together by course.
- Blog: This is where I am writing now. I made it easy to post articles.
- Publications: I created the page. More content can be added here.
All things considered, it would be fair to say that the website was built entirely anew. The important thing is that the existing content was preserved. It is astonishing that this work was completed in just a few hours. Someone said that the AI tools we had been using had remained confined to chat, and that was something I did not understand until I tried this. It was a shock.
At this moment, I am excited about what I should do next, but I am also worried. What should we teach? What should we learn? Will what we leave behind matter? What will have greater meaning? Is the research we are doing necessary? Faced with these doubts, perhaps it is time to find the work we need to do.
